A Change of Plans
Over the past couple of weeks, several things happened that made us rethink our itinerary and make some changes to it. First, Foca where we were going to spend the last couple of nights before I fly to Istanbul had some serious flash flooding and the town is still in "clean-up" mode. So, that was removed from our stops. Then, we realized how much driving this road trip has entailed - not that we didn't know it at the start - but it has been really tiring so Atahan wanted to change it up a bit. Finally, he received some news that a friend of his was scheduled for surgery and he wanted to be closer to Izmir. So, we added a two-day boat charter than would give me a different perspective by seeing the coast from the water and we replaced Foca with a couple days in Kusadasi (the main cruise port for visiting Ephesus) staying at a lovely hotel there. So, with that, here is how the last few days have gone.
From there, we drove to Turunc, a small town close to the much bigger and touristy city of Marmaris. There, we boarded a 19 metre boat captained by a friend of Atahan. Osman along with his son, Okcay (also the chef), and another crew member, Furkan, took great care of us as we cruised into quiet coves, swam, relaxed, ate like royalty and, occasionally, were a bit crazy. It was really a lot of fun - in spite of the fact I speak only two words of Turkish (one being "cheers" which came in quite handy). Never in a million years did I ever think I'd be spending two nights on a boat with 4 Turkish guys and having such a good time! In addition, the scenery was spectacular. After two nights on the boat, we disembarked and headed for Kusadasi.
The LaVista Boutique Hotel where we are staying is very pretty with lovely rooms, an infinity pool and sweeping views of the sea looking toward some Greek islands. We will stay here for two nights before heading to Izmir where, after a couple of nights there, I will be heading home as my adventure is fast coming to a close.
We spend a night in Dalyan which was a favourite of mine last year. We spent a relaxing afternoon sitting on the hotel's dock watching the tour boats go up the river to see the Lycian tombs we'd seen last year.
